Muddy Handshake — Clay
I have been a maker of functional pottery for the past twenty years. As such, I belong to a centuries-old tradition of potters. I am driven by a desire to master my craft; the opportunity to create meaningful connections between makers and users of objects; and the ongoing process of learning to make work that is beautiful, functions well, and feels good in the hand.
Form is the starting point of my work. It is the shape the gives the work its presence. Once the form is made, the surface and decoration work to make a unified pot that is both beautiful and functional. The feel of a pot in the hand has equal consideration with the visual qualities of the piece. Most of my pots are made to be used and I intend to make pots that work well and are a joy to use.
